What is website management?

Website management is everything a website needs after it goes live: hosting and infrastructure, security and patching, backups, uptime and performance monitoring, software updates, content and design changes, speed optimization and reporting. A website that is not managed slowly gets slower, less secure and less accurate until something breaks in public. A managed website is checked every day, fixed before customers notice and improved every month.

Most companies handle this in one of four ways: an in-house webmaster, a freelancer, an agency retainer or the "care plan" bundled by a hosting company. Genacom's nTier Website Management is a fifth option: a complete outsourced web team, on a flat monthly fee, with a named engineer who knows your site. This page explains exactly what is included, how it works, what it costs and how it compares.

Seven layers. One plan.

Compare all five options in detail

Most Genacom clients invest between $875 and $3,000 per month, depending on the size of the site, how often it changes, traffic and compliance requirements. The fee is flat: no hourly invoices, no per-request charges and no surprise project overruns. Everything on the "what is included" list above is covered.

Compare that with the alternatives. A minimal in-house web team of two to four people costs $180,000 to $400,000 a year once salaries, benefits (30% to 40% on top of base pay), software and management are counted. Freelancers and agencies look cheaper per project at $3,000 to $15,000, but the finding, coordinating and re-doing adds up, and nobody is watching the site between projects. See example plans and what affects your price, or get a custom quote.

The honest comparison. A host care plan is fine for a brochure site; an in-house team is right when the web is your product. For everyone in between, nTier is the only option that combines a full team, a flat fee and 24/7 coverage.

Sound familiar?

Any two of these usually cost more in lost leads and staff time than a managed plan.

Your developer left. Nobody knows where the backups are.
Updates are months behind because the last one broke something.
Contact forms fail silently. SSL certificates expire unnoticed.
Mobile pages take over three seconds. Core Web Vitals show red.
Changing a phone number takes weeks and a purchase order.
Marketing launches wait on developer availability.
Host, freelancer, SEO vendor, designer, and nobody coordinating.

Website management, in depth

The details behind the plan, for the people who read everything before they call.

What is included in Genacom website management

One monthly plan covers all seven layers of the nTier standard. You never pick and choose, and nothing on this list is billed per request.

  • Managed hosting and infrastructure. Your site runs on servers we configure, patch and tune, with SSL certificates, DNS, CDN and email deliverability handled for you. A 99.9% uptime SLA backs it, and proactive monitoring means we usually know about a problem before you do.
  • Security and hardening. Web application firewall, malware scanning, login protection, file-integrity checks and same-day patching of core software, themes and plugins. We treat every site as reputation-sensitive, because it is.
  • Backups and disaster recovery. Complete data, version and configuration backups stored offsite, tested restores and a documented recovery plan. When Spalding needed a restore, our team did it all; that is the standard for every account.
  • 24/7 monitoring and remediation. Uptime, response time, SSL expiry, form delivery and error logs are watched around the clock. Alerts go to engineers, not to a ticket queue, and emergencies get a 24/7 response.
  • Updates and maintenance. CMS, plugin, framework and dependency updates are tested on staging and released on a schedule, so your site never runs versions with known vulnerabilities.
  • Content, design and development changes. New pages, landing pages, product updates, design tweaks, forms, integrations and bug fixes, handled by designers and programmers on your account with same-day turnaround on routine requests.
  • Performance and reporting. Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP), caching, image and code optimization, plus a monthly report on uptime, work completed, traffic and what we recommend next.

Need more than management? Our digital marketing and custom web development teams work inside the same account, so growth projects never fight with maintenance.

Who website management is for

nTier is built for companies whose website matters to revenue but who do not want to build a web department. Typical clients have 20 to 500 employees and a marketing or operations leader who is tired of chasing freelancers. We manage sites for manufacturers, B2B service companies, e-commerce brands, healthcare and medical device companies, universities, wineries and hospitality businesses, and technology companies.

It is also a fit for enterprise teams that need an overflow web team with a track record: we built and ran Google's 22-language claims platform for the 2006 click-fraud settlement, resold nTier through NTT America, and have supported Hearst, DirecTV, Jacuzzi and Spalding. If your site is a hobby project or you plan to change platforms every year, a flat monthly plan is probably not the right spend.

Platforms we manage

We are platform-agnostic on purpose, because most businesses inherit their website rather than choose it. Our team manages and develops on:

  • WordPress and WooCommerce, including multisite, custom themes and headless builds.
  • Shopify, Webflow and other hosted platforms, where we manage themes, apps, integrations and content.
  • Custom PHP, LAMP and JavaScript applications, from Laravel and Node to legacy code nobody else wants to touch.
  • Legacy and enterprise systems, including .NET, Java and fulfillment or ERP integrations. Zerowater came to us with a home-grown .NET store tied to an old fulfillment system; we kept it running, then rebuilt it on LAMP without breaking the integration.

Response times and support

Every account gets the same commitments, in writing:

  • Emergencies (site down, hacked, checkout broken): 24/7 response, engineer engaged within the hour.
  • Routine requests (content, design, small development): same-day acknowledgement and, in most cases, same-day completion.
  • Projects (new sections, integrations, redesigns): scoped with a timeline inside your monthly plan or as a fixed quote.
  • Monitoring: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a 99.9% uptime SLA.

You talk to people who already know your site. There is no hold music, no offshore ticket triage and no "have you tried clearing your cache".

Looking for webmaster services or a dedicated web manager?

If you are searching for webmaster services, a web manager or someone to "just look after the site", nTier is that role done by a team: a named engineer who knows your stack, backed by designers, programmers and systems engineers, on one flat monthly fee. The webmaster services page explains how the modern version of the job works and what it costs.

What a month of website management looks like

Every nTier client receives a monthly report. A typical one covers uptime for the month against the 99.9% SLA, security events blocked and patches applied, backups taken and restore tests run, software updates released, the content, design and development requests completed with turnaround times, Core Web Vitals and traffic trends, and a short list of recommendations for next month. The report is written by your engineer, not generated by a plugin, and it is the agenda for your quarterly call.

Behind the report is a daily routine: monitoring checks every minute, security scans and backups every night, update reviews every week, performance and SEO hygiene every month, and a full audit every quarter. That cadence is what turns a website from a liability into a business asset that compounds.

Website management checklist

Whether you hire Genacom or handle it in-house, these are the tasks a well-managed website needs. Use it to audit your current provider.

  • Daily: uptime and error monitoring, security scan, offsite backup, form and checkout test on critical sites.
  • Weekly: review and apply security updates, check search console and analytics for anomalies, clear spam and review user accounts.
  • Monthly: apply feature updates on staging then production, test a backup restore, review Core Web Vitals and page speed, audit broken links and redirects, publish scheduled content, send the report.
  • Quarterly: full security and accessibility audit, dependency and PHP or runtime version review, hosting capacity review, SEO health check, strategy call.
  • Annually: renew domains and certificates that do not auto-renew, review privacy policy and cookie consent against current law, plan design refreshes and platform upgrades.

Every item on that list is included in every Genacom plan. If your current provider cannot show you evidence of each one, that is the conversation to have this week.

Questions, answered

The ones we hear on every first call.

Do I have to move my hosting to Genacom?

No. Most clients do move to our managed infrastructure because it is included and makes monitoring and security simpler, but we can manage sites on your existing host or cloud account when there is a reason to stay.

Is there a long-term contract?

Plans are month to month after onboarding. We keep clients by doing the work well, not by locking them in; many accounts have been with us for more than a decade.

Who will actually work on my site?

A dedicated engineer, your web manager, owns your account and is backed by Genacom's designers, programmers, systems engineers and marketing team in Napa, California. You talk to the people doing the work, not a ticket queue.

Can you fix a hacked or broken site before we sign up?

Yes. Emergency cleanup and recovery is often the first thing we do for a new client. After the site is stable we move it onto a monthly plan so it does not happen again.

How is this different from a hosting company's care plan?

A care plan runs automated updates and backups on a shared server. Genacom gives you a team that makes content and design changes, writes code, watches the site 24/7, optimizes performance and answers the phone. The cost difference is small next to the difference in what you get.

Do you work with businesses outside California?

Yes. Genacom is headquartered in Napa and serves clients across the United States and internationally. Everything is delivered remotely; location has never been a barrier.

What is website management?

Website management is the ongoing hosting, security, backup, monitoring, updating, content maintenance and performance work a website needs after launch. It is different from web design (building the site) and from web hosting (renting a server). Genacom's nTier plans include all of it for one flat monthly fee.

What does Genacom website management include?

Managed hosting and SSL, security hardening and malware scanning, daily offsite backups, 24/7 uptime and security monitoring, CMS and plugin updates, content and design changes, development fixes, Core Web Vitals optimization, and a monthly report. Digital marketing and custom development are available inside the same account.

How much do website management services cost?

Most Genacom clients pay a flat fee between $875 and $3,000 per month depending on site size, update frequency, traffic and compliance needs. There are no hourly invoices or per-request charges. See the pricing page for example plans.

Is website management the same as website maintenance?

Maintenance is the reactive part: updates, fixes and backups. Management adds the proactive part: monitoring, security, performance, content changes, reporting and a plan for the site. Genacom does both under one plan.

Which platforms do you manage?

WordPress and WooCommerce, Shopify, Webflow, custom PHP/LAMP and JavaScript applications, and legacy .NET or Java systems with ERP or fulfillment integrations. If it runs on a web server, our engineers can manage it.

How fast do you respond?

Emergencies get a 24/7 response with an engineer engaged within the hour. Routine content and design requests are acknowledged the same business day and usually completed the same day. Monitoring runs around the clock with a 99.9% uptime SLA.

Who owns my website, content and accounts?

You do. Your domain, hosting, code, content and analytics remain your property and stay in accounts you control. If you ever leave, you take everything with you.

How do we get started?

Book a 1:1 strategy call or request a quote. You will have a written scope and flat monthly price within two business days, and onboarding usually takes one to two weeks with no downtime.
